A narrow service alley in Miraflores is dominated by the heavy, sun-bleached concrete walls of a residential building, where a makeshift drying rack is strung between two rusted iron balconies. The flat noon light washes out the color, leaving only the stark contrast of a white plastic step stool wedged against the wall and a cluster of dried, brownish flowers tied with twine, their brittle heads nodding in the dry coastal breeze. Below, a woman in a faded apron balances a metal mixing bowl on her hip while reaching for a ceramic jar, her movement blurred by the heat haze rising from the pavement.
