Dishwasher after dark in Rome
by Roy Guerra
Under the amber glow of a sodium streetlamp in a narrow Trastevere alley, a weary dishwasher leans against a chipped stucco wall, clutching a dented metal tiffin tin to his chest. The heavy steel door behind him is slightly ajar, spilling harsh white kitchen light onto the wet cobblestones where a discarded plastic dustpan lies near a puddle reflecting neon signage. One folding chair sits abandoned on the sidewalk, its canvas sagging under the weight of a dark jacket, while steam rises from a nearby vent, obscuring the upper windows of the residential building above. The quiet exhaustion of late-night service work, framed by the rough texture of aged brick and the slick sheen of rain-slicked pavement.
