On the counter beside him, a stack of clean white soup bowls waits, their ceramic surfaces catching the harsh fluorescent interior light, while a pair of heavy tailor shears lies discarded near a napkin dispenser, hinting at a hurried break. Rain streaks the exterior pane, blurring the passing headlights of a yellow taxi into streaks of white and red.
