Diablada Dancers Beside Canal Before Dawn
Cold moonlight spills over wet stone beside the canal in Salvador, illuminating the backs of two Oruro Carnival diablada devil dancers. Their elaborate costumes gleam with metallic silver and deep crimson scales, heavy with raindrops gathering in the crevices of the leather and wire. Dramatic, heavy storm clouds loom low above the water, their undersides glowing faintly against the pre-dawn indigo sky. The dancers stand motionless, their towering horned masks facing the channel, creating a stark silhouette against the mist rising from the surface. Rain slicks the cobblestones, reflecting the dim silver light and the dark, intricate shapes of the costumes. Fabric rests on heavy shoulders while water beads on polished metal horns. One droplet slides down the curve of a horn, catching the light before falling into the dark water.
