Dhow Under Construction Before Dawn in Havana in across a remote ferry crossing near Vedado, Havana

Dhow Under Construction Before Dawn in Havana

by Philip Quinn

A wooden dhow rises from the sand, its hull still unfinished, positioned where a ferry crossing should be near Vedado. The sky is heavy with dramatic clouds, illuminated by a sweeping beam of lighthouse light that cuts across the dark beach. Concrete blocks line the shore, but impossible white flowers erupt from cracks in the gray stone, their petals glowing under the artificial beam. The dry season air leaves the wood grain sharp and the concrete dusty. Diagonal lines of the ship's ribs and the light's edge create tension across the frame. at the edge is a single red petal resting on the dark, wet sand near the keel.
