Delivering Pastries in Paris

A narrow Parisian staircase lit by the flat, grey winter light reveals a landlady balancing a tray of freshly baked pain au chocolat against the rough stucco wall. Her wool coat is a vibrant fuchsia, against the damp, peeling green paint of the banister. On the landing below, a tenant’s door stands ajar, exposing a cluttered entryway where a charcoal sketchbook lies open on a mat next to a pair of wet rain boots. A glass carafe of water sits on a small table by the window, its surface reflecting the overcast sky outside. The quiet, lived-in texture of a haussmannian building, with the warmth of the bakery goods clashing against the chill of the corridor.
