Courtyard Plants in Marrakech

by Kenneth Tapia

The late afternoon sun slants through the lattice of a riad courtyard, casting sharp geometric shadows across terracotta tiles and whitewashed walls. A local gardener pauses beside a narrow channel of running water, his hands resting on a rough stone edge as he inspects a cluster of potted cacti and jasmine vines. The light catches the dust on his faded blue djellaba and the worn leather of his sandals. In the background, a faded blue door with a heavy iron deadbolt stands slightly ajar, hinting at the cool interior. A small, hand-painted ceramic water mark stains the plaster near the base of the wall, evidence of recent cleaning.
