The amber sunset casts long, warm shadows that stretch across the spice vendor's display in Chongqing, highlighting the textured fibers of the corn against the vibrant red powder of the peppers. Early autumn air hangs clear, visible in the sharp definition of the husk fibers and the matte finish of the wooden surface. The vendor works methodically, the discarded husks piling beside the fresh ears. One pile of bright yellow kernels rests on a worn cloth, catching the last glow of the day.
