Coral Atoll Reflected in Rainy West Bengal Floodplain

by Anne Marshall

Cold silver dawn light spills across a waterlogged floodplain in West Bengal, transforming a rain-slicked expanse of mud and standing water into a perfect mirror. A vibrant turquoise lagoon and a ring of coral atoll float within the reflection, their colors stark against the grey morning sky. The water surface remains undisturbed, holding the image of the distant reef with crystalline clarity. Swollen fields stretch toward the horizon, heavy with the weight of the rainy season. A narrow strip of dark earth separates the reflection from the sky above, at the base of the impossible geometry. The edge of a puddle catches the first hint of gold as the sun begins to rise.
