Copper Pots in Rio De Janeiro

by Morgan Perry

A narrow balcony in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, catches the first sharp rays of sunrise that slice through the morning haze to illuminate a cluster of heavy copper pots hanging on a rusted iron rack. The bright metal surfaces reflect the warm orange light against the rough, faded blue painted brick of the colonial building facade behind them. Below the balcony, the steep, winding slope of the city is visible, dotted with colorful tiled roofs and tangled green vines climbing up the steep hillside. One drop of condensation rests on the rim of the lowest pot, trembling slightly before falling onto the worn stone ledge.
