Construction Roll Stand on Muddy Road

by Khalil Hurley

A heavy steel roll stand holds a large finish-floor protection cylinder on a churned mud road in British Columbia. Thick mist hangs low, softening the edges of the equipment while pale blue light from the water reflects across the wet ground. Warning labels in bright orange and black wrap around the cardboard sleeves, their text sharp against the gray fabric. Taped plastic flaps drape over the steel frame, catching the dull sheen of the monsoon rain. Dust mixes with the mud, coating the lower wheels and the base of the stand. A rusted bolt head gleams faintly where the metal meets the damp earth.
