Commuter in Toronto at Noon Light

by Juan Daniel

Through the fogged lower pane of a streetcar window, a commuter’s gloved hand grips a metal stanchion while a steaming paper coffee mug rests precariously on the adjacent seat back. Outside, the flat winter noon light washes over a slush-stained sidewalk where pedestrians in heavy parkas hurry past a brightly painted community mural. The interior is hazy with condensation, blurring the reflection of a digital route sign that reads '501 Queen.' A discarded umbrella leans against the door, its black fabric dripping onto the yellow safety line. The mundane rhythm of transit in the city, contrasting the cold, wet exterior with the warm, cluttered intimacy of the moving carriage.
