Outside a corner convenience store on a frost-bitten Toronto street, a cluster of commuters huddles near the glass entrance, their breath pluming in the sharp noon light. A woman in a heavy parka holds a steaming paper cup, the steam catching the harsh winter sun. Beside her, a man checks his phone, his scarf pulled high. The sidewalk is slick with melting slush, reflecting the red and white signage of the shop. A discarded coffee cup sits near the curb, half-submerged in ice.
