Commuter in Stockholm at Noon Light
by Connie Mack
Inside a cramped Spårväg City tram cabin, winter noon light falls through frost-rimmed windows, illuminating a seated commuter in a heavy navy raincoat. Their dark wool trousers are speckled with lint from the synthetic seat fabric, a subtle texture of urban transit life. Beside them, a metal peg rail holds a single damp umbrella, its handle worn smooth by grip. The floor shows thin scratches in the linoleum, evidence of countless boots. Through the glass, blurred gray birch trees pass by, their bare branches stark against the overcast sky. The quiet, shared solitude of Stockholm’s public transport, where personal items rest against public infrastructure, creating a lived-in tableau of daily routine.
