Children Racing Paper Boats in Damanhur Night
by Jo Chang
Cold moonlight washes over a narrow gutter stream flowing through the streets of Damanhur, illuminating tiny paper boats pushed forward by small hands. Several children run alongside the water, their breath visible as faint white clouds in the autumn air. Sea spray hangs low, catching the pale light and misting the pavement where the children's colorful sneakers splash. The paper vessels, folded from bright newspaper and scrap, bob in the shallow current, their edges glowing under the silver sky. Behind the runner in the foreground, friends lean in with open smiles, their faces lit by the same stark, wintry glow. One boat tilts sharply, its paper hull catching the reflection of a distant streetlamp on the wet asphalt. The water ripples outward, distorting the moonlight into fractured silver lines across the dark stones.
