Children Drawing Chalk Sidewalk Matamoros
by Audrey Booth
Bright tropical light falls through a thin layer of light fog, softening the harsh edges of the late afternoon in Matamoros. Several children stand at the very edge of a concrete sidewalk, their attention fixed on colorful chalk lines they have drawn on the gray pavement. The dry season holds the ground firm, with no weeds cracking the concrete. Their shadows stretch long and faint across the street, muted by the atmospheric haze. Chalk dust settles on their shoes, a fine white powder against the darker stone. The children's clothing is simple, suitable for the warm, humid air. One child holds a piece of blue chalk, the tip worn down from use. The drawing itself is a collection of geometric shapes and loops, vibrant against the dull city surface.
