Child Drumming in Johannesburg

Late afternoon sun cuts through the highveld haze, hitting a corrugated zinc roof where a child in a faded soccer jersey balances precariously on a rusted metal stool. Below, in the shadowed doorway of a brick bungalow, a wooden spindle chair sits empty beside a stack of empty glass beverage bottles. A yellow plastic garden cloche rests overturned on the dusty concrete path, its interior coated in red dust. The child holds a small, dented tart tin, using it as a makeshift drum, striking the rim against the leg of the stool. In the background, a Havanese dog with matted fur watches from the threshold, tail still.
