The cool season air leaves the velvet fibers slightly stiff, holding the weight of the game pieces without shifting. Muted reflections stretch across the floorboards, mirroring the orange dance of the flames. Every curve of the carved king and queen reveals the grain of the stone, showing the stillness of the moment before dawn breaks.
