Carved Muqarnas Vault in Kinshasa Stair Hall

Pale walls reflect soft afternoon light into the stair hall, illuminating a complex muqarnas vault carved directly into the plaster ceiling. The geometric honeycomb structure creates deep, rhythmic recesses that catch warm interior shadows against the cool season air. Each tier of the vault steps downward in precise, angular formations, turning the flat plaster surface into a dense lattice of three-dimensional facets. The indirect illumination highlights the rough texture of the carved edges while leaving the deepest corners in soft darkness. One geometric void at the center of the pattern anchors the composition, its sharp lines against the smooth, unadorned wall surfaces surrounding the archway.
