Carrying Bread in Fez

by Brett Gregory

Wet cobblestones in the medina reflect the pale, diffused morning light, slick with recent rain. A local baker in a white apron carries a heavy wooden tray of fresh khobz, his shoes splashing lightly against the stone. The scene is anchored by a vibrant blue door frame, its paint chipped and scuffed, adorned with a simple woven door wreath. Nearby, a small tea stall displays glass cups and a tin canister, steam rising faintly into the cool air. The colors are saturated and clean, the blues and terracottas popping against the grey wet pavement. A plastic raincoat hangs loosely on a hook nearby, unused but present, adding a touch of everyday utility to the colorful, historic setting.
