Broom at Midday Light
by Kenji Newton
Under a flat, diffuse overcast sky, a narrow Roman alleyway reveals a lived-in service entrance where a white plastic laundry basket overflows with folded linens on a tiled step. Beside it, a rusted metal broom leans against a peeling ochre wall, its bristles splayed from use. Above, a burst of vibrant magenta bougainvillea spills over a wrought-iron balcony, its papery bracts contrasting sharply with the muted gray stone. A small, weathered terracotta pot sits near the basket, holding a few dried sprigs of rosemary. A quiet moment of domestic routine, with the rough texture of the ancient masonry juxtaposed against the smooth, bright fabric of the laundry and the vivid organic color of the climbing plant.
