Broom at Evening Light
by Rodney Gill
A narrow Parisian stairwell glows with the warm, saturated amber of late summer evening light spilling through an open doorway. Against the peeling green paint of the risers, a pair of rusted garden shears rests casually on a step, their metal blades catching the sun. Beside them, a worn broom leans against the wall, its straw bristles dusted with fine gray mortar. The scene is lived-in and unposed, with the rough texture of the aged plaster contrasting against the smooth, reflective metal of the tools. One shadow stretches long and sharp across the landing, at the base of the mundane objects in the quiet, golden hour stillness of a residential building in the 11th arrondissement.
