Brass Basin in Marrakech

by Edward Ashley

First light after rain washes the narrow alley in soft, diffused gray, reflecting off the slick cobblestones that line the path between high ochre walls. A local vendor balances a heavy brass wash basin on his hip, the metal tarnished and pitted from years of use, while water drips steadily from a cracked spout onto the wet ground. Beside him, a stack of majolica plates with intricate blue and white geometric patterns rests precariously on a low wooden crate, their glossy surfaces catching the muted ambient light. Rain droplets rest on the broad leaves of a potted olive tree in the corner, trembling slightly as the vendor shifts his weight.
