Late summer heat hangs heavy over a narrow alley in Palermo, where the fading light catches the peeling ochre stucco of a centuries-old building. A young boy balances precariously on a wooden stool outside a small hardware shop, his attention fixed on a paper fan fluttering in the stagnant air. Beside him, a wall shelf mounted at chest height holds an eclectic mix of tools, including a pair of calipers and an old ink bottle, their surfaces dulled by decades of dust along the baseboard.
