Cart Uphill in La Paz
by Ralph Morin
A steep, cobblestone alley in La Paz rises sharply under the pale, thin light of early morning, flanked by whitewashed adobe walls and corrugated metal roofs. In the middle ground, a vendor pushes a heavy wooden rolling cart laden with bright yellow challa bundles and sacks of potatoes, the wheels creaking over the uneven stones. The cart’s wooden slats are worn smooth by years of use, against the rough, dust-coated stone steps. A small, stained doormat lies askew in front of a dark wooden door, half-covered by a stray potato. The air is crisp and clear, typical of the high altitude, casting long, sharp shadows that stretch across the narrow passage, showing the verticality of the city.
