Boy in Alexandria at Flat Noon Light

by Corinne Ray

A narrow alleyway in Alexandria’s historic district is flattened by the harsh overhead sun, bleaching the faded ochre stucco walls to a pale cream. A young boy in a faded blue t-shirt stands on a cracked concrete step, holding a tarnished hand mirror up to his face, squinting against the glare. The mirror reflects a distorted slice of the sky and the top of a rusted iron gate, breaking the monotony of the flat light. Beside him, a rough wooden door is propped open by a heavy stone, and a single green vine curls through a crack in the masonry, casting sharp, geometric shadows against the textured plaster.
