Box Plants in Luxor

by Gavin Rutledge

The pale morning light of Luxor spills across the dusty street, catching the heat haze rising from the asphalt near the Temple of Karnak. A cyclist pedals past, his silhouette sharp against the bright sky, carrying a bundle of goods on his handlebars. On a nearby windowsill, a small cluster of potted succulents and a flowering plant in a chipped terracotta pot sit in the shade, their green leaves vibrant against the sand-colored stucco. A simple boot scraper rests by the door, worn smooth by years of feet, while a chess clock sits abandoned on a plastic table, its buttons dusty.
