Soft gray skylight falls through the mist of a light drizzle, illuminating a researcher working beside a mossy stone wall in the Sichuan basin. The botanist wears a dark, water-resistant jacket and handles delicate autumn specimens with steady fingers. Freshly cut stems with serrated green leaves and small purple blossoms rest on a white pressing board. Raindrops rest on the broad leaves of nearby bamboo and glisten on the wet stone surface. A notebook with handwritten Chinese characters lies open next to a metal press frame. The researcher's gloved hand holds a pair of shears, positioned precisely over a cluster of wildflowers. one drop of water slides down the edge of the white paper, leaving a darkened track against the crisp page.
