Botanist Kneeling Beside Alpine Saxifrage in Winter
by Hazel Morin
Wind whips through a stark winter landscape near Vancouver as a botanist kneels on snow-dusted ground beside hardy alpine saxifrage. The plant displays clusters of pale pink flowers clinging to rocky soil, against the surrounding gray stones and patches of melting ice. A pressed specimen folder lies open on the snow, revealing dried leaves mounted on white paper. Reflected light from a nearby body of water casts a cool, silvery sheen across the ground, highlighting the texture of the botanist's heavy winter coat and the crisp edges of the dried specimens. The wind bends the low-growing flowers slightly, straining against the biting cold of the dead of winter. At the edge of the frame, a sharp, dark outline of a rock rests against the bright, shimmering water in the background.
