Bologna Pot at First Light
by Joan Parks
First light after rain washes over the uneven cobblestones of a narrow Bologna alley, reflecting the damp brick facades and the warm glow of a nearby trattoria window. A small, weathered flowerpot sits precariously on a low stone ledge, its soil dark with moisture and sprouting a single resilient sprig of basil. Beside it, a few red apples rest on the wet pavement, their skins slick and shiny under the diffused morning light. In the background, the arched porticoes stretch into the mist, their columns fading into the gray haze. A discarded paper cup lies near the fruit, its rim stained with the dark residue of espresso, hinting at a hurried morning routine.
