Bologna Apprentice at Dusk Light
by Eloise Bowen
Under the awning of a cramped Bologna bookshop, a young apprentice balances on a red plastic step stool to reach a high shelf, her fingers brushing a spine while rain streaks the glass facade behind her. The wet street outside reflects the warm tungsten glow of the interior, casting long, distorted shadows across the terrazzo floor. A wicker mending basket sits abandoned near the door, spilling a few threads onto the damp pavement, while a dented metal bicycle rim leans against the display counter, catching a sharp glint of the shop’s sign. Passersby hurry past with umbrellas, their movements blurred by the low light, creating a busy, candid snapshot of daily life persisting through the evening drizzle.
