Blue Sparks Mid-Fall in Zhangjiajie Physics Lab

by Pauline Valentine

Darkness fills the university research room in Zhangjiajie, broken only by the electric blue discharge from a central induction coil. Glowing instrument readouts cast a faint green and amber light across the metal workbench. The dry season air is still, evidenced by the lack of dust movement. Floating in the center of the frame, ten metal bolts and glass shards hang frozen in mid-air, defying gravity. These objects remain suspended perfectly still, creating a sharp geometric pattern against the deep shadows. Monitor screens in the background display static graphs, their glow reflecting off the smooth surfaces of the suspended debris. The negative space around the coil emphasizes the isolation of the experiment.
