Beltane Torch Procession Rain Drizzle Pietermaritzburg

Soft gray light falls through a fine mist falling over a muddy hillside near Pietermaritzburg. A procession of participants moves along a wet dirt path, their faces illuminated by the flickering orange glow of handheld torches. Rain beads on the rough wool of heavy coats and drips from the brims of wide-brimmed hats. The ground churns into dark, slick clay underfoot, reflecting the dancing flames. Smoke rises in thin, erratic wisps, blending with the low-hanging clouds. In the background, the dark silhouettes of eucalyptus trees stand against a pale, overcast sky. The firelight catches the wet texture of bark and the damp skin of hands gripping wooden poles. One ember sparks from the end of a torch, falling onto the sodden earth.
