Balancing Plates in Porto
by Janice Adams
Sunlight cuts sharply through the open doorway of a traditional pastelaria, illuminating a counter where a server in a white apron balances a stack of white ceramic plates against her hip. Behind her, the wall shows peeling turquoise paint revealing layers of older cream plaster, against the glossy enamel surfaces of the vintage espresso machine to the left. A small glass sugar jar sits near the register, catching the bright afternoon glare. Outside, the blurred shapes of pedestrians in light coats move along the cobblestone street, their motion softened by the depth of the interior. The busy rhythm of service, framed by the historic architecture and the tactile details of daily commerce.
