Mist rests on the weathered brick facade of a corner bakery in Toronto’s Annex district, softening the sharp edges of the cast-iron fire escape that zigzags up the building. Through the fogged glass of the ground-floor window, a tea seller arranges porcelain jars on a wooden counter, their steam rising in thin, ghostly ribbons that merge with the cold air outside. A Canaan Dog rests its chin on a stool near the door, ears perked, watching the street where a single streetcar bell rings in the distance.
