Artillery Battery Silhouette Winter Sunset
by Joan Gibbs
Copper light spills over the jagged ridge of Chamonix, painting the sky in deep oranges and fading violets. Beneath a heavy camouflage net shelter, the dark forms of an artillery battery stand in disciplined stillness. The equipment appears as stark, black silhouettes against the glowing horizon, their metal surfaces reflecting only the ambient firelight warmth from within the tent. Snow blankets the ground in thick, undisturbed drifts, catching the low angle of the sun. The heavy canvas of the shelter frames the scene, its texture rough and weathered against the smooth, cold air. Inside the shadowed interior, faint orange glows suggest a small fire, casting long, dancing shadows that stretch across the frozen earth. The silence hangs heavy, a pause before the machinery stirs again. One beam of firelight catches the edge of a cannon wheel, highlighting the frost clinging to its spokes.
