Arranging Stall in Salvador

by Cynthia Beard

Mist rests on the narrow cobblestone street of Pelourinho as a vendor arranges her stall before the city wakes. A faded blue apron hangs from a rusted iron hook nailed into the colonial stucco, swaying slightly in the damp breeze. Beside it, a wooden ladder-back chair sits empty, its slats worn smooth by decades of use. The vendor’s hands, dusted with flour, adjust a stack of ceramic jars, their glaze catching the diffuse gray light. In the background, the silhouette of a church tower emerges from the fog, while wet stones reflect the muted colors of the surrounding buildings. One drum brush rests on a crate, hinting at the cultural heartbeat of the neighborhood.
