Arranging Oysters in Halifax

by Amy Ho

Rain-slicked cobblestones in Halifax’s Old Town reflect the soft, diffused grey of early morning, with droplets clinging to the rusted iron railing of a historic granite building. A local fishmonger, bundled in a waxed canvas jacket, stands behind a wooden stall, carefully arranging a pile of glistening oysters on crushed ice. The oyster shells catch the faint light, their iridescent interiors against the wet, dark stone of the street. Nearby, a small window box over a shop door holds hardy green ferns, damp and vibrant against the weathered brick.
