Arranging Dates in Nairobi

Cool early morning light spills across a dusty Nairobi street corner where a woman in a bright yellow shuka stands behind a makeshift stall constructed from corrugated iron sheets. She arranges clusters of dark, ripe dates on a worn wooden board, their sticky skins catching the soft, diffuse glow of the dawn. Behind her, a faded blue corrugated roof slopes down, punctuated by the rusted hinge screws of a swinging door that opens into a shadowed interior. One woven basket sits overturned near her feet, its frayed edges brushing against the concrete, while a simple metal bellows leans against the wall, unused but present.
