Adjusting Bag in São Paulo

by Nancy Bright

Flat noon light washes over a narrow sidewalk in Vila Madalena, where the harsh shadows of a concrete overhang cut sharply across the pavement. A woman in a faded yellow blouse pauses to adjust a heavy canvas tote bag hanging from a rusted iron coat stand anchored near a bakery entrance. Beside her, a small wooden doormat, worn smooth by years of feet, catches the dust kicked up by passing pedestrians. The wall behind them is a chaotic mosaic of blue and white tile fragments, some loose and jagged, others firmly set in gray mortar. One branch of vibrant magenta bougainvillea spills over a wrought-iron gate, its leaves stark against the white stucco.
