Discarded Pottery in São Paulo

by Corey Cook

A narrow service alley in Vila Madalena reveals a chaotic stack of weathered terracotta pots and chipped ceramic bowls on a rusted metal cart, abandoned against a wall of peeling turquoise stucco. Flat noon light washes out the colors, leaving only the sharp contrast between the dry, dusty earth tones of the broken pottery shards and the bright, bleached paint. One, frayed burlap sack spills its contents near the cart's wheel, while a faded graffiti tag in bold red letters climbs the brickwork above.
