Dog Waiting in Accra
A narrow stairwell in a Kumasi-style apartment block glows under the harsh amber wash of a streetlamp filtering through the open landing door. The iron stair rail, painted in peeling white lead, curves sharply around the corner, catching the light on its rusted joints. At the base of the steps, a small black dog sits patiently, its eyes reflecting the sodium glare, waiting for its owner to finish a late-night conversation on the balcony above. The rough, unpainted concrete walls typical of Accra’s high-density housing, with a faded blue door slightly ajar behind the animal, revealing a glimpse of a tiled floor and a single pair of slippers left carelessly near the threshold.
