Accordion with Mother-of-Pearl Buttons in Portsmouth Mist
by Oscar Bender
Broad skylight diffuses through a thick, low-hanging mist that softens the edges of a Portsmouth public square. A black accordion rests against a weathered stone wall, its bellows slightly compressed. The instrument's surface shows subtle scratches and a matte finish that absorbs the gentle contrast of the midday light. Rows of mother-of-pearl buttons catch faint, cool highlights, their iridescent sheen standing out against the dark wood. The surrounding space opens into a wide expanse of gray pavement and distant, blurred architecture, creating a deep pool of negative space. Fine water droplets rest on the stone texture nearby, while the soft gray fog wraps the background in a muted haze. One button reflects a pale patch of sky visible through the mist above.
