Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony Sydney Temple Courtyard

by Dawn Allison

Warm firelight glows against the cool grey stone of a temple courtyard in Sydney, casting long shadows across the paved ground. Smoke rises in thick, humid plumes from a smoldering pile of native leaves, drifting slowly through the late autumn air. Three figures stand in the rule of thirds, their silhouettes sharp against the fading golden light of the sky. Damp patches on the stone reflect the orange flames, while dry, brown eucalyptus leaves scatter near the fire's edge. The smoke curls around bare branches of nearby trees, blurring the boundary between the sacred ritual and the urban architecture surrounding the courtyard. One ember glows red at the center of the ash pile.
