Workshop Workbench in Sapporo
by Carole Lang
Mist rests on the corrugated iron roof of a narrow Sapporo back-alley workshop, where the gray dawn light diffuses through the damp air. Inside, a cluttered workbench reveals a lived-in reality: a rusted screwdriver set rests beside a leather apron, while an awl lies abandoned near a half-finished repair job. Outside, the wet pavement reflects the muted glow of a distant streetlamp, highlighting the slick texture of the alley walls. A watercolor tin, forgotten and smeared with pigment, sits near the open doorway, its contents dried into a crust. The quiet intersection of manual labor and artistic residue, with the cold, wet air of early morning settling over tools that have seen both precision and improvisation.
