Under the flat, unforgiving noon light of a Muscat souq, a metal tool pegboard hangs against a sun-bleached plaster wall, its hooks holding an array of screwdrivers and wrenches that catch no shadows. Beside it, a stack of wool scarves in faded indigo and rust rests on a wooden crate, their textures rough against the smooth, heat-shimmered air. A rolling cart laden with brass lanterns sits idle nearby, its wheels dusted with the fine white sand that permeates every surface.
