Worker Pausing in Muscat
by Ernest Hines
A narrow service alley in Muscat’s Mutrah district glows under harsh late-morning sunlight, where a local worker in a white thobe pauses beside a weathered storefront. The shopfront displays a cluttered array of goods, including a bright red colander hanging from a rusted pegboard hook, its holes casting sharp, geometric shadows against the peeling turquoise paint. Beside it, a dusty open shelf holds a cluster of houseplants in cracked terracotta pots, their green fronds against the dry, sun-bleached concrete. A faded doormat lies curled at the threshold, absorbing the heat from the stone pavement.
