Wildflowers in Mason Jar on Iquitos Mantel

by Evangeline Villanueva

Small purple blooms and green vines fill a clear glass mason jar resting on a rough-hewn wooden mantelpiece. The wood grain shows deep fissures and a dark, weathered patina from the humid wet season. Outside the window, heavy gray clouds press against the glass, diffusing the late-afternoon light into a soft, even glow. No shadows fall sharply; instead, the light wraps gently around the jar's rim and the delicate petals. The wildflowers appear slightly damp, their colors muted by the overcast sky. Dust settles on the uneven surface of the mantel near the jar's base. A faint reflection of the gray clouds appears on the curved glass shoulder of the jar.
