Wildflowers in Glass Jar on Garden Mantel
by Hana Hicks
Hard coastal glare strikes a glass jar filled with autumn wildflowers resting on a weathered wooden mantel. The jar sits outdoors against a backdrop of terraced garden plots near Charlotte, where rows of crops stretch down the slope. Wind whips the tall stalks and dried leaves, bending them sharply against the bright midday sky. The glass reflects the intense sunlight, creating sharp white highlights on its curved surface. Dried grasses and seed heads in shades of rust, gold, and pale brown fill the vessel, their textures rough and brittle. The wooden mantel shows signs of sun exposure with a faded gray grain. Behind the jar, the terraced earth forms distinct horizontal lines leading toward the horizon. A cluster of bent stems presses against the glass, their shadows falling across the jar's base.
