Wild Basil in Florence in in Florence, Italy

Wild Basil in Florence

by Jake Ballard

Under the flat, shadowless glare of Florentine noon, a narrow service lane reveals a weathered stone wall where a cluster of terracotta clay pots sits abandoned beside a rusted metal drain. The pots, cracked and stained with age, contrast sharply with the smooth, pale stucco of the building behind them. One sprig of wild basil grows from a fissure in the mortar, its green leaves stark against the dusty earth tones. The ground is paved with worn travertine tiles, scattered with dry leaves and a few pieces of discarded newspaper.
